Following many trials and tribulations on 8 September 1938 Empire Day piloted by Edward Spurr unofficially broke the world speed record for its 400kg class (indicated by pennant number K4) at 73 m.p.h. The image will have been taken pre-run indicated by the clean hull and the canopy forward of the engine being in position. Image TP246 shows the exhaust smirch with the canopy section removed during the unofficial record-breaking run.
