Statue Convent

Late 1950s

Portrait format. A crowned statue from 1958 of Our Lady of Furness holding baby Jesus stands on a plinth in the grounds of Croslands Convent with bushes and trees behind. The plinth bears the seal of Furness Abbey, partly inspiring initial designs by Our Lady’s School pupil, Margaret Dines. Sculpted in Italy from red marble, it reflects Furness’s red sandstone. In 2020 it stands outside St Mary’s church on Duke Street.
