Romney's Cottage, Hawcoat.

Post 1908

Portrait postcard view of George Romney's Cottage and Museum, restored and opened by the Furness Railway on 01/07/1909 (The Furness Railway Ken Norman 1994), which ran tours to it and the following year opened a tea room nearby. The cottage still exists above the former Hawcoat Quarry. On the quarry floor in the foreground is a standard gauge rail track, and a small winch. In the middle distance are the sandstone terraces of Bradford Street, Chester Street and Grosvenor Street, with allotments at the right hand end. In the distance the slag bank has a train and at least one steam engine working on it.
