"Mr R -Dann- This is the Dept. where I work. The two articles like gasometers are the working chambers + the gun mount. The two boiler like affairs- are trunks these extend from shell room to gun breach and have hydraulic cages to carry shells. One trunk feeds 2 guns at the rate of 2 shells each per minute. In the distance we have two guns in the armour arrangement which in turn goes on top of gun mount. The 3 guns on the -nests- on the floor are 13.5” in diameter. They fire 80 shells + then require fluted rifling inside renewing. ”

Date Posted: | The Sankey's were given significant access to the inside of the shipyard buildings. The shipyard is still there. Known as 'Vickers' as it was owned by Vickers-Armstong for a long time. In recent years- it has had a number of different owners. It is currently owned by BAe Systems, although the older people in Barrow still often refer to it as 'Vickers' | |
