The Ferry Crossing the Lake

The Steam Yacht Swan approaching the pier at the Ferry Hotel on the west side of Windermere. It can be identified by the large white swan on the bow (See 2006). Several passengers in summer clothing. The steam chain ferry from Ferry Nab is crossing in front. Some small boats on the lake. The Kentmere Ridge, with Ill Bell prominent, can be seen on the skyline. The first cable ferry, powered by steam, commenced operation in 1870. New ferry boats were introduced to the route in 1915 and 1954, when a boat named Drake was introduced. The current ferry boat, named Mallard, was built in 1990 and can carry up to 18 cars and over 100 passengers.
