Early 20th century

Looking west at a three-arch sandstone road bridge which crosses the River Derwent. On the north bank, the road slopes up to the crossing while on the right the road immediately crosses a railway line parallel to the river on another bridge. A railway signal box at road height commands views of the line down the valley; behind black smoke is evident, perhaps the smoke from a locomotive.
