Arnside Viaduct Column Structure

Early 20th Century

View from beneath the eastern arch of Arnside viaduct, looking north-west across the Kent estuary. The tide appears to be coming in. There is a winch mechanism in the foreground; a chain structure against the second column, and a fixed ladder against the second arch's landward side. Speculation suggests that the winch and chains may have something to do with the rebuild of the bridge during WW1, perhaps to do with lifting and safety respectively.
