Martello Tower, Jersey. Conway Tower, Jersey

Early 20th Century

Low tide. Strictly speaking this is not a Martello Tower, but an earlier 'Jersey round tower', (Conway Tower) though they are often called Martello Towers. Possibly Archirondel Tower. Built on a rocky outcrop from 1793-95, it was the first to have a gun platform at the base. In the photograph, a child is playing on the shingle, with a woman watching from the breakwater. At the top of the breakwater, another woman or two sit at the top of the breakwater. Ropes run down it to secure other boats.
