Grasmere

Mid-20th Century

Looking east-south-east towards Church Stile in the centre of the village where a number of tall, ornamental trees are prominent. The road form a gentle S-bend between low dry stone walls which define property boundaries. On the left, sun blinds are out above a shop selling books, maps, guides and clothing; in front is a sign for a tea shop and a bakery. On the right there are parts of two buildings and parts of two dark saloon cars are also visible. In the middle distance, as the road curves to the right, a glazed canopy runs along the front of a substantial three-storey building with multiple gables and gabled windows - probably a hotel. The image is titled 'H546/216 Grasmere' for postcard printing purposes. Portrait view.
