Windermere

Mid-20th Century

Looking slightly east of north from a roadside on the west side of Windermere, the road curves gently at the left of the image and over a slope projecting into the lake. In the centre foreground, the slope and a stone 'pier' create two small 'bays', in both of which a rowing boat has been pulled onto the lakeshore. A woman guides a pushchair towards the shore where a man and child stand taking in the scenery. Beyond, the two islands 'Lilies of the Valley' all but obscure a third, Thompson's Holme, while the background features the slopes on the east side of the lake, well-covered with trees , in front of the highest Lakeland fells. The image is titled 'H595/214 Windermere' for postcard printing purposes.
