"Coniston Dear Kathleen & Phylis We have had a very happy week here, although the weather has been rather unsettled. Miss D. Fleming is away. We were rather disappointed at not meeting her again. We have had some lovely walks and rides and also had some soakings to. Yesterday we went to see -Meg?- at Barrow with Mr -surname unclear- of Airdrie. There are five other sisters staying at Mrs -surname unclear-. We are hoping to go to -unclear- this coming week. Love from Sr. Hamer L. Bayley -two other names unreadable-”

Date Posted: Ennerdale is a valley in the west of Cumbria. It runs from the high Lakeland fells (including Great Gable, Pillar and High Stile westwards to the coastal plain. The lower part of the valley floor is occupied by Ennerdale Water, which is some 3km long. The upper part of the valley has historically been used by the Forestry Commission for commercial forestry. Since 2003, the Wild Ennerdale project has been in place, aimed at removing the mature historic trees and re-introducing more local species. The valley is relatively unspoiled due to its remote location and because there is no public access by road beyond Bowness Knott near the foot of the lake. See: www.wildennerdale.co.uk en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ennerdale,_Cumbria At the foot of Black Sail pass in upper Ennerdale is a former shepherd's cottage, now the rather remote Black Sail Youth Hostel. The hills in the background are part of the High Stile ridge between Ennerdale and Buttermere.
