"Dear Nellie Received the P.C. this morning. I am glad to hear you having a good time. It looks a lovely place. Had a lovely sail in one of the pleasure boats. It was lovely. Just going to watch the Soldiers off to Barrow. We saw them going to the Barracks last night. Our Jack sent us word as they have broken up they do not know where they have to be stationed next. Good bye love to all from Mags xxxx”

Date Posted: There is a large semi-circular building in the background of the photo. At the time this would have been the North Euston Military Barracks. This was built between 1839 and 1841 as a hotel as a staging point for the journey north. At that time rail travllers heading north by train had to alight at Fleetwood then get a ferry to Ardrossen before rejoining the train to Glasgow, as at that time they couldn't build a railway over the Shap hills between Lancaster and Penrith. Fleetwood was the most northerly station on the West coast line from Euston, hence the name- morning will proceed to Barrow. Report of their leaving on the Friday for Barrow: Fleetwood Chronicle, 11 August 1914 – Shortly after nine o’clock, the bugles sounded the assembly, and the men, under the command of Captain Kean and Lieut. Carter, formed up in London Street and headed by the Church Lad’s Brigade Band, marched to the railway station where they entrained for Barrow. They were enthusiastically cheered en-route. At the station, a large crowd was waiting, and again cheer upon cheer rent the air. After the Terriers had passed on to the platform and had arranged their compartments, the public were admitted, and there was a general rush to the train side. There were many hand shakings and several touching scenes were witnessed between wives and families of the men. The railings and bridge over-looking the station were thronged with people, and as the train steamed out, the wildest excitement prevailed. Cheer after cheer was raised, and handkerchiefs and hats were waved. When the train passed out of sight, they were taken up again at Wyre Dock Station as the train passed through. Can these articles be added??? The North Euston Hotel was still being advertised as a hotel in December 1914, so the write up on the postcard is confusing. The Territorials were billeted at the Hutment Barracks, Fleetwood. The postcard picture would have been taken before the First World War.
