Date Posted: The Three Shire Stone marks the point where the three counties of Lancashire, Cumberland and Westmoreland met prior to the creation of Cumbria in 1974. It was made in Cartmel from a block of limestone in 1816 for the Furness roadmaster William Field. It was only erected at the top of Wrynose Pass in 1860, The Three Shire stone only says "LANCASHIRE” on it – there is no mention of Cumberland or Westmoreland. On the rear is the inscription "W.F. 1816”It is a Grade II listed monument. It has twice been damaged in recent years. In 1997 it was smashed into four pieces. It was restored by stonemason Gordon Greaves of Troutbeck Bridge and unveiled on 27 April 1998. It was again damaged in 2017. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Shire_Stone_(Lake_District)
