Date Posted: | SS Gartbrattan was a single-screw steamship, built by Barclay Curle, on the Clyde, Glasgow and launched on 6th May 1931. The first owners of the ship were Gart line LTD of Whimpster & co, Glasgow. The ship was sunk in collision with S.S. MELROSE ABBEY in 51.03N -19.35W, west of Cape Clear on passage Aberdeen via Milford Haven for Lisbon with coal and mail on 5th November 1940. The British named Livorno, in Italy, the Port of Leghorn. After unloading in Livorno, the S.S. Gartbrattan was said to be going to the nearby port of Genoa. The "Elva Seed” pictured in the postcard was a steam cargo ship built in 1924 at Schiedam in the Netherlands and owned by the Seed Shipping Co. Newcastle It was sold to Sweden in 1928, renamed "Stig Gorthon”, and sunk by a mine in the River Weser in 1941. | |

Prince of Wales Dock, Workington
Mid 1920s
View north across the dock to the far side. A single funnelled ship, Elva Seed, is moored on the left. A mobile dockside crane is ready for unloading. One very large crane and a number of smaller cranes can be seen around the dock. A man is standing on the dockside beside the bow, close to the railway track.
