"Well here we are again having a few days at the Lakes. The weather has not been too good but yesterday the sun shone all day and we had a good walk round. When young Harrison gets on his feet I shall have to initiate him into the mysteries of rope dangling - I am sure he will like it. Hope you had a good holiday. Why didn't you tell her you would be in the Wye Valley - I could have seen you as it is not very far away. Yours Jim”

Date Posted: Scafell Pinnacle, and indeed the Scafell cliffs generally, were one of the earliest areas for the development of rock climbing in the Lake District. The earliest climbers were generally based at the Wasdale Head Inn at the head of Wastwater, about a 90 minute walk from the Scafell cliffs. The pinnacle was first climbed in the 1890s and there are now numerous routes on it. It was the scene of the worst accident in Lake District climbing history when four climbers were killed in a fall in 1903.
