Date Posted: | The photo shows the main entrance to the port at Whitehaven, with a tower on either side of the entrance. Whitehaven was a significant port from 16C, becoming a major port for trading coal within the UK and for trading with the Americas from the 1750s. As a port it declined significantly with the port developments at Bristol and Liverpool which could handle much larger ships. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitehaven The entrance to the harbour looks much the same in 2021 as in the Sankey photograph It was a port used by the triangular slave trade with America, where goods were taken from the UK to Africa to be exchanged for slaves, who were taken to the Americas, and goods such as tobacco, sugar, bananas etc. brought back to the UK. The Piers & Harbour Entrance
1920s
View looking out to sea on the North Pier with the lighthouse tower on the end and steps down. Across the Outer Harbour is the West Pier with the larger lighthouse and the Cattle Slip. Four men are rowing away from the pier and another rowing boat is moored. Men are looking down to the boat, two boys climb on the capstans and someone sits with a pram.
