| Date Posted: | The Hartington Street Wesleyan Methodist congregation was established in an separate building in 1874 and opened the new King's Hall- on 12 September 1907. The hall was a place of worship which could also be hired for other functions, having a seating capacity of around a thousand. The congregation later merged with the nearby Hartington Street Methodist Church in around 1951, with the King's Hall building subsequently being used for a variety of civic purposes. The Wesleyan Methodist church was formed in the 18th century from religous societies founded by John Wesley and his preachers. It suffered many secessions, but was the largest Nonconformist denomination in the 19th century. In 1932 the Wesleyan Methodists joined with the Primitive Methodists and the United Methodists to form the Methodist Church of Great Britain. | |
