| Date Posted: | In the 19th century there were 13 mines and workings in the area of Foxdale. The mines yielded a rich output of zinc blende, lead ore and silver. The mines came under the ownership of the Isle of Man Mining Company who operated them until closure in 1911 Manchester Courier and Lancashire Advertiser, Monday 20 April 1908: Had they ever known a time when the engineering trade was in a worse condition than now? In Barrow owing to the competition of American steel dumped in the country, there were hundred of workpeople thrown out of employment and the engineers had sent a deputation to the Board of Guardians concerning relief. Wage rates conformed generally to the state of trade, a rise in a boom, a reduction in a slump, the last pre-war year of depressed trade was seen at Barrow in 1908. Lancashire Evening Post, Saturday 14 March 1908, Dundee Courier, Monday, 12 October 1908 reported the steel works closed down affecting railway and docks employment, the Flax and Jute workers were put on short time and Vickers saw a shortage of orders; Manchester Guardian, 17 February 1909, unemployment returns indicated 1,840 men or 3.2 per cent of the population were unemployed, Barrow was exceptional and of thirteen Lancashire distress committees and three labour registries had the highest population percentage unemployed The sender lived at 5 St Luke Street Barrow. | |

Photograph taken inside the Vickers works gunshop showing a line of BL 7.5 inch Mk V gun turrets under construction for the British armoured cruiser HMS Shannon. Additional QF 12 pounder 18 cwt guns are mounted on top of the turrets. Two are complete; the others are still to have their barrels fitted.
