Barrow Steel Works, Hindpool, Barrow-in-Furness

Early twentieth century

Among the buildings and equipment of the Steel Works complex, the Barrow Steel Works Ltd 0-4-0 saddle tank locomotive number 7 stands ready for duty, bearing the initials of the Barrow Hematite Steel Company Limited and number along its tank. No exhaust is visible from the funnel but the safety valves have lifted, allowing a plume of steam to drift over the boiler. (This had been Furness Railway 0-4-0 tender locomotive number 20, rebuilt in 1870 for use in the Steel Works where it served until 1960 after which it was donated to George Hastwell Special School, Abbey Road, Barrow for the children to enjoy. In 1983 it was bought privately and eventually restored to original identity and condition. Now in the care of the Furness Railway Trust, it is the oldest working standard gauge steam engine in Britain.)
