Incorrectly titled in the catalogue, the Awatea (Maori for “eye of the dawn' or 'daylight') built by Vickers Armstrong Barrow for Union Steam Shipping New Zealand, was launched on 25th Feb 1936. Photo probably taken prior to departure, July 1936. The Awatea was requisitioned during WW2 as a troopship and sunk by the Luftwaffe off North Africa in 1942. The hammer-head crane in the photograph was also destroyed - during the Barrow Blitz in 1941.
