Orcades built at Vickers Barrow for the Orient Line. Launched 7th Dec 1936 and used for the NZ and Australian route. Requisitioned by the Admiralty in 1939 and used as a troopship. Torpedoed and sank by U Boat 172 off South Africa in October 1942. Photo probably taken from Roa Island with the vessel in transit under its own steam. Small sailing boat in view.
