Stratheden was launched, from the Top Yard Slipway, on 10th July 1937 at Vickers Armstrong Barrow- in-Furness for P&O to use on its UK to Australia run. She was requisitioned by the Admiralty during the Second World War and was extensively used as a troopship in both theatres of war. The photograph shows the vessel sliding down the slipway and entering Walney Channel. Hold-back chains are slack and about to drag. Workers on board ship
