Launch of Strathallan (P&O)

29 Sep 1937

Strathallan slides down the slipway towards Walney Channel. Piles of drag chains, used to arrest motion once the ship enters the water, line either side of the slipway and a small group of workers watches the launch from the slipway itself. Built for P&O, Srathallen was launched on 29th September 1937 but was requisitioned by the Admiralty during World War Two and used as a troop and hospital ship until sunk by U172 in the Mediterranean during December 1942.
