Launch of Orcades

Orcades built at Vickers Barrow-in-Furness for the Orient Line and used for the NZ and Australian route. Requisitioned by the Admiralty in 1939 and used as a troopship until torpedoed and sunk by U-Boat 172 off South Africa in Oct 1942. The vessel has entered Walney Channel with hold back chains now slack. Wooden launch debris is being cleared by small boat. Tugs not yet in attendance.
