Launch of Orcades

Orcades built at Vickers Barrow-in-Furness for the Orient Line was launched on 7th December 1936 and used on the NZ and Australian route. Requisitioned by the Admiralty in 1939 and used as a troopship, she was torpedoed and sunk by U-Boat 172 off South Africa in October 1942. In this image tugs are attempting to take the vessel in tow with small boats clearing launch debris.
