Launch of HMS Illustrious – Aircraft Carrier

Aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious was launched 5 April 1939 and saw action in both theatres of war during World War Two. Severely damaged on several occasions by enemy action and collisions with other vessels but she survived the war, and was scrapped in 1955. Vessel in Walney Channel just after launch, tugs in attendance preparing to take in tow into Barrow docks complex. End of Vickers slipways in view.
