Launch of HMS Illustrious – Aircraft Carrier

Aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious was launched 5 April 1939 and saw action in both theatres of war during WW2. Severely damaged on several occasions by enemy action and collisions with other vessels, but survived the war and was scrapped in 1955. Vessel sliding down slipway and entering Walney Channel with shipyard workers observing the launch. Identification of the partly-constructed vessel on adjacent slipway not known.
