Launch of HMS Illustrious – Aircraft Carrier

Aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious was launched on 5th April 1939 and saw action in both theatres of war during WW2. Severely damaged on several occasions by enemy action and collisions with other vessels, but survived the war and was scrapped in 1955. Vessel entering Walney channel with shipyard workers observing the launch, drag chain wires in full tension to slow down entry into the water. Union Jackand Vickers House flags flying from flagstaffs.
