Launch Himalaya

5 Oct 1948

The Orient Line, after WW2, like many other British and Commonwealth shipping companies, embarked on rebuilding their fleets due to their losses. Himalaya was launched on 5th October 1948, and initially was mainly used to transport people to new lives in Australia and NZ. ('£10 Pom's) Image shows Himalaya being towed in Walney Channel by tug boats belching black smoke. A crowd of shipyard workers watches at the bottom of the slipway, under the crane.
