The Orient Line, after World War Two, like many other British and Commonwealth shipping companies, embarked on rebuilding their fleets due to their losses. Himalaya was launched on 5th October 1948, and initially was mainly used to transport people to new lives in Australia and NZ. ('£10 Poms') Image shows Himalaya entering Walney Channel with drag chains in full tension and a crowd of shipyard workers at the bottom of the slipway under the crane.
