After World War Two, P&O like many other British and Commonwealth shipping companies, embarked on rebuilding their fleets due to their losses. Chusan - launched on 28th June 1949, and used mainly on the UK to Australia/NZ route to transport thousands of people to new lives there ('£10 Poms'). Chusan being fitted out at Buccleuch dock under 150T crane - Aircraft Carrier astern could be HMS Majestic/HMAS Melbourne.
