Orient Line Oronsay

May 1951

After World War Two, P&O, like many other British and Commonwealth shipping companies, embarked on rebuilding their fleets due to their losses. Oronsay was launched on 30th June 1950 and used mainly on the Australia and NZ route to transport thousands of people to new lives in Australia and NZ. (£10 Poms) This image shows Oronsay departing Barrow under tow by tugs in Buccleuch Dock. Iconic "Welsh hat funnel” retrofitted two years after this photo was taken.
