After World War Two, P&O like many other British and Commonwealth shipping companies, embarked on rebuilding their fleets due to their losses. Himalaya - launched 5th October 1948 - was used mainly on the UK to Australia/NZ route to transport thousands of people to new lives there. (£10 Poms). Himalaya ready to be towed out of Barrow dock complex into Walney Channel, still tied up but with tugs taking the strain, ready for departure.
