Nov 1960

The Orient Line, after World War Two, like many other British and Commonwealth shipping companies, embarked on rebuilding their fleets due to their losses. Oriana was launched on 18th September 1957 and used mainly on the Australia and New Zealand route to transport thousands of people to new lives in Australia and New Zeland (£10 Poms). Image shows the Oriana departing Barrow November 1960 under tow by tugs down Walney Channel heading for the Piel Island. Photo taken from Roa Island.
