Standard Oil Co. Barge No. 94
1908
In 1908 a novel way of shipping oil to Britain’s west coast ports was introduced when the Standard Oil Co. Barge No. 94 was towed across the Atlantic by tanker. In November the barge was destined for Barrow in tow of SS Taramac, each with 6,000 tons of oil. Due to the low tide at their planned destination they diverted to Dublin to discharge part of their cargo before proceeding to Barrow to unload the remainder. Although designated a barge, SO 94 could be termed a five-masted schooner that could proceed under sail if required. The towing line was three-quarters of a mile long and put little strain on the steamer; only two days being added to the normal voyage.
