Convict Ships Success & Whinlatter , Barque.( only Success was convict ship)

The ship 'Success' was launched in Burma in 1840 and had a varied career including as an emigrant ship to Australia and as a prison ship. In 1890 she was converted into a floating museum of the penal era and travelled the world, ending her days on Lake Erie USA where she was destroyed by a fire in 1946. The ship is shown at the North end of Devonshire dock accompanied by the sailing barque Whinlatter, launched 1887, owned by R Williamson of Workington before being sold to Norwegian owners about 1909 subsequently sunk by a U-boat in 1917.
